Jowls

Jowls

Jowls are the folds or excess of skin that form on the jawline close to the chin. They are often accompanied by Marionette lines which are the deep wrinkles or folds that run from the corner of the mouth to the jawline. Jowls form as the Malar fat pad descends. In our youth, the Malar fat pad is located high up near the cheekbones (zygomatic bones).

As we age, the Malar fat pad (and surrounding structures) descends our face. Initial signs of Malar fat pad descension is the hollowing of the face below the eyes. This often results in a tired appearance and possibly dark circles under the eyes. As we continue to age, the Malar fat pad continues further down the face creating more pronounced nasolabial folds, causing the corners of the mouth to downturn and eventually finishing with the formation of marionette lines and jowls. It might be an inevitable process of ageing, but none of it sounds nice right?

Thankfully, with the development of advanced dermal fillers, we are able to delay the descension and mask the visible signs of this process. The earlier you commence treatment with dermal fillers, the better your long-term results will be. To soften the appearance of jowls, Dr Wilkinson adds dermal filler to the marionette lines and jawline. This beautiful treatment can create a much more youthful appearance in around 45 minutes. It is a comfortable and affordable treatment with results lasting up to 2 years. Importantly, advanced dermal fillers are very safe. If you are not happy with the results of any dermal filler treatment, it can be instantly reversed, safely and without side effects. What have you got to lose?
